THE FIRST PLANT IN CONTINENTAL EUROPE USING UNIQUE TECHNOLOGY TO TRANSFORM WASTE INTO RESOURCES
The Biscay Eco Aggregates plant, located in the Port of Bilbao, is the first plant in Continental Europe to apply this Accelerated Carbonation Technology to produce ecoaggregates with a negative carbon footprint.
The facility uses industrial carbon dioxide to transform thermal waste into sustainable materials for the construction sector, integrating carbon capture, waste recovery and circular economy into the same industrial process.
Biscay Eco Aggregates places the Basque Country and the Port of Bilbao at the forefront of European industrial solutions for the decarbonisation of the construction sector.
A TECHNOLOGY THAT CAPTURES AND STORES CO2
The technology ACT used in the plant is based on a Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) process developed by O.C.O Technology, which allows carbon dioxide to be captured and permanently fixed in the form of stable mineral aggreagate.
During the process:
- Thermal waste is used, mainly fly ash from waste incineration.
- CO₂ captured during industrial processes is added.
- Under controlled conditions, an accelerated carbonation reaction occurs that transforms the material into a stable calcium carbonate, otherwise known as Limestone.
It is the same process which forms the limestone in nature but it takes place in our facility in minutes instead of in a millennia.
STRATEGIC LOCATION
The plant is in the Port of Bilbao, strategically placed to allows integration with Petronor’s industrial ecosystem and direct access to logistics and port infrastructure, optimising the transport of raw materials and products.
We have developed an industrial project to support the circular economy and the energy transition.
